At CrossRoads we see discipleship developing in three phases:

Phase I – Love

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

We believe that God, through Jesus Christ, invites all to participate in His grace. Through participation in God’s salvation we are also invited into an intentional journey with Jesus.

This “journey” is what we refer to as discipleship. God’s grace works in us even before we come to know Jesus. This shows God’s love for us. So to all who read this and may not know who Jesus is yet, just know that “God loves you and so do we!”

As we walk with Jesus together we come to discover God’s plan and purpose for us. We discover that we are not alone, that we are part of a community and this community is part of a movement based on God’s love.

Come and join the movement.

Phase II – Transformation

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:2)

We believe that when we are intentional about our discipleship, the Holy Spirit transforms us. That is, we begin to see the world and those around us in a new way – the way that Jesus sees. More importantly, we begin to be like Jesus.

This does not mean that we stop being who we are, but it does mean that our values and priorities change. This inevitably affects, in a positive way, how we engage with and react to the world around us.

This we believe is achieved by our intentionality of being disciples. But what is a disciple?

A disciple is someone who follows Christ and strive to be like Christ. At CrossRoads we do this by:

  • Studying Scripture
  • Serving Others
  • Living Lives of Worship

If we engage in these three activities we will experience spiritual growth as disciples of Jesus. We will not only join God’s redemptive movement on Earth, but we will be active participants in it.

Phase III – Lead

Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10: 42-45)

For all of us who are disciples, we know that there is one commission for all the Church – To make disciples of Jesus Christ! Disciples are made; they don’t just grow on trees. And for those who follow Jesus, it is our responsibility to lead people in their discipleship.

We must understand that as followers of Jesus in community together, we must disciple one another. We do this by being accountable to one another and loving one another as Christ loved us. None of us will ever stop being disciples and we are all called to make disciples.

At CrossRoads we believe that an intentional Disciple Maker is someone who:

  • Gives Information
  • Accompanies Others on Their Faith Walks
  • Models the Christian Life

If, as disciples, we engage in these three things with someone else, we are helping them in their discipleship and we take on the role of Disciple Maker.
